About Julian Javier

Nineteen sixty-two was Javier's first truly full big league season: 155 games, 598 at-bats and a .263 average built on 157 hits. Splitting leadoff duty with Curt Flood in Johnny Keane's order, he scored 97 runs and stole 26 bases, both career highs he never matched. Collectors chasing this second-series number should know it comes two ways. Some copies carry a green tint across the design and some do not, and the two are catalogued separately, so a run that looks complete by number may still be a card short for anyone who wants both.

Manuel Julian Javier Liranzo, born August 9, 1936 in San Francisco de Macoris, was a Dominican second baseman who spent twelve of his thirteen major league seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, 1960 through 1971, before a final year with the Cincinnati Reds in 1972. Pirates scout Howie Haak signed him for the 1956 season; blocked in Pittsburgh by Bill Mazeroski, he was traded to St. Louis in May 1960 and was in the starting lineup the same day, with two hits against the Giants. Tall and lanky at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds, he built his reputation on speed, range and bunting rather than power, and earned the nickname the Phantom for turning the double play while slipping away from sliding baserunners. He was a two-time All-Star, in 1963 and 1968, and won World Series rings with the Cardinals in 1964 and 1967, batting .333 across nineteen World Series games. He finished with a .257 average and 1,469 hits. At home he founded a youth league later renamed for Roberto Clemente, a four-team summer league, and, with his son Stan, the Gigantes del Cibao of the Dominican Winter League. He entered the Dominican Republic Hall of Fame in 1978 and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2022.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Where a grader registers a variation separately its population is listed under that variation. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
