1962 Topps #202 Carl Warwick

About Carl Warwick
Warwick's rookie card, #202 in the third series of 1962 Topps, catches him as a Cardinal, the uniform he wore for just 13 games that spring. He opened the year 8-for-23 at the plate, and then on May 7 St. Louis packaged him with reliever John Anderson and sent him to Houston for pitcher Bobby Shantz. Back in his native Texas with the expansion Colt .45s, he became an everyday big leaguer for the first time, starting 104 games in center field and hitting .260 with 16 home runs, second on the club. Counting the one he hit as a Cardinal, his 17 homers and 64 RBIs were both career highs, and he batted .264 for the year.
Carl Wayne Warwick (1937-2025) was a Dallas-born outfielder who batted right-handed and threw left-handed, a combination rare enough that by 1966 he was the only man in the majors listed that way. He played six big-league seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Colt .45s, Baltimore Orioles, and Chicago Cubs. Warwick played baseball at Texas Christian University and left after his junior year to sign a bonus contract with the Dodgers, then tore up the minors: Texas League MVP in 1959 at Victoria, where he hit .331 and led the league with 35 home runs, 324 total bases, and 129 runs scored, followed by an American Association all-star season at St. Paul in 1960. He debuted for Los Angeles on April 11, 1961, and was traded to St. Louis that May 30 with Bob Lillis for Daryl Spencer. A 1962 deal made him an everyday outfielder for the expansion Colt .45s, and the Cardinals brought him back in February 1964 as a reserve and pinch hitter. That October he reached base in his first four World Series pinch-hit trips as St. Louis beat the Yankees in seven games. He retired with 363 hits, 31 home runs, and a .248 average, and was elected to the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
