1962 Topps #369 Ted Bowsfield

About Ted Bowsfield
Card #369 in the 1962 Topps set, a series-4 number, belongs to Bowsfield's second Angels season. He went 9-8 with a 4.40 ERA over 34 games and a career-high 25 starts. In late May his left arm went so weak he could not throw the ball to the plate, and he understood he had been diagnosed with polio; electro-shock therapy brought his strength back, and the club physician later called it a misunderstanding, arm weakness rather than the disease.
Ted Bowsfield (born Edward Oliver Bowsfield, January 10, 1935, in Vernon, British Columbia, and raised in Penticton) was a left-handed pitcher who reached the majors on July 20, 1958, with the Boston Red Sox. Red Sox scout Earl Johnson signed him in 1954 for a $4,000 bonus. As a rookie he beat the New York Yankees three times in 22 days, prompting Casey Stengel's remark that no left-hander Boston had carried since Mel Parnell managed that, and the Boston chapter of the baseball writers voted him its Rookie of the Year. Boston traded him to the Cleveland Indians in June 1960, the expansion Los Angeles Angels took him in the December 1960 draft, and he finished with the Kansas City Athletics. Arm trouble ended him after seven big-league seasons: 37-39, a 4.35 ERA, 326 strikeouts, 12 complete games and four shutouts in 215 games. He then ran ballparks for two decades, directing stadium operations for the Angels, Seattle's Kingdome and the Tacoma Dome, and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame on June 4, 1988.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-09-24. Half-grades fold down (8.5→8), and PSA's qualified grades are counted separately from the straight-grade rows shown here. Slabs of the three cards printed #139 are joined by description, never by number alone. PSA registers the green tints as a separate set; a tint's population is listed under that state of the card it belongs to.
