1963 Topps #570 Frank Bolling

About Frank Bolling
Card #570 falls in the seventh series, the high numbers that make the back end of the 1963 set the hard part for collectors to finish. It pictures Bolling with the Braves. He stayed the everyday second baseman that year, playing 142 games and batting .244 with 5 home runs, 43 runs batted in and 73 runs scored, but 1963 ended his two-year run of All-Star selections.
Frank Bolling was a second baseman who played twelve major league seasons, six with the Detroit Tigers and six with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves. Born in Mobile, Alabama, he signed with Detroit in June 1951 and reached the majors in 1954; military service cost him the 1955 season, and he came back to hold the Tigers' second-base job through 1960. A sure-handed defender, he won a Gold Glove in 1958 after leading American League second basemen in fielding percentage, and he later led National League second basemen in fielding in 1961, 1962 and 1964. Traded to Milwaukee after the 1960 season in the deal that sent Bill Bruton to Detroit, he made the National League All-Star team in both 1961 and 1962. His best year at the plate was 1958, with career highs of 164 hits, 91 runs and 75 runs batted in. He finished at .254 with 106 home runs and 556 runs batted in over 1,540 games, and he never took the field at any position but second base. His older brother Milt was a major league shortstop, and in 1958 the two briefly turned double plays together in Detroit. Bolling was elected to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
