1963 Topps #476 Frank Funk

About Frank Funk
Number 476 is a semi-high in the sixth series, tougher than the early runs, and it is the first Topps card to show Funk in a Milwaukee uniform. Cleveland traded him on November 27, 1962, sending Funk, outfielder Don Dillard and a player to be named later to the Braves for Joe Adcock and Jack Curtis; the following March the Braves took outfielder Ty Cline to complete it. In 1962, the season he carried into the deal, he went 2-1 with a 3.24 ERA and six saves over 47 games and 80 2/3 innings for the Indians.
Franklin Ray Funk, a right-handed pitcher out of Washington, D.C., was born August 30, 1935 and signed with the New York Giants as an amateur free agent in 1954. His road to the majors ran through Toronto of the Triple-A International League, which picked him up before the 1959 season and sold his contract to Cleveland in August 1960. Funk debuted for the Indians on September 3, 1960, and he never started a big-league game: all 137 of his appearances came in relief, and he finished 20-17 with a 3.01 ERA, 150 strikeouts and 18 saves. Cleveland shipped him to the Milwaukee Braves in a November 1962 trade for Joe Adcock and Jack Curtis, and the 1963 season in Milwaukee was his last in the majors, though he kept pitching in the minor leagues through 1969. Coaching filled the decades that followed. He managed in the minors and worked as a big-league bullpen or pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants, the Seattle Mariners, the Kansas City Royals and the Colorado Rockies between 1976 and 1998.
