About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

This Milwaukee Braves Rookie Stars card came two seasons before Britton's debut, while he was working his way up through the organization after Atlanta drafted him off the Orioles' system in the November 1962 first-year draft. He shares the card with fellow prospect Larry Maxie, a pairing typical of the era's Rookie Stars format that grouped multiple hopefuls from the same organization on a single card. A 6-foot-5 right-hander from North Tonawanda, New York, who pitched for the Braves and Expos from 1967 to 1971 and later became an FBI special agent.

In 1964 Larry Maxie was still working his way up through the Braves' system, years away from his 1969 big-league debut; he had reached Triple-A in 1961 and would spend a dozen seasons in the organization before Atlanta called him up. This 1964 Topps card, printed number 94 in the set's first series, is a Rookie Stars issue shared with fellow Milwaukee Braves farmhand Jim Britton, pairing the two pitching prospects under the Braves banner. It stands as Maxie's recognized rookie card, issued five years before he ever threw a major league pitch. Larry Maxie spent 15 seasons in the Braves' farm system, winning 125 games in the minors, before a brief two-game relief trial with the Atlanta Braves in 1969.
