1964 Topps #198 Len Gabrielson

About Len Gabrielson
Card #198 is Gabrielson's first solo Topps issue, a series-3 base card that still lists him with Milwaukee. The line on the back is his 1963 season: 46 games, a .217 average, three home runs and 15 RBI, his longest big league look yet. The card was barely out of the wrapper before he changed clubs. On June 3, 1964 the Braves traded him to the Chicago Cubs for $40,000 and a player to be named later, catcher Merritt Ranew, who went to Milwaukee five days afterward.
Len Gabrielson was a second-generation big leaguer: his father, Leonard Gabrielson, spent part of the 1939 season with the Philadelphia Phillies. The son, a left-handed-hitting outfielder out of the University of Southern California, signed with the Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent on July 19, 1959, and debuted on September 9, 1960, at age 20. He did not appear in the majors again until 1963, and from there he became one of the decade's better-traveled outfielders, playing for five clubs in all -- Braves, Cubs, Giants, Angels and Dodgers -- with four trades moving him between June 1964 and May 1967. He hit .301 for San Francisco in 1965, the only .300 season of his career, and led the Dodgers with ten home runs in 1968. Across nine major league seasons (1960, 1963-1970) he batted .253 with 37 home runs and 176 RBI in 708 games, mostly in left and right field.
