1964 Topps #59 Ernie Broglio

About Ernie Broglio
Broglio drew the Opening Day start again, losing to Sandy Koufax at Los Angeles on April 14, 1964, and was 3-5 when general manager Bing Devine made the call. He went 4-7 in Chicago, woke up in late August with his right elbow swollen and locked, was shut down in September, and listened by phone as St. Louis celebrated a World Series title. Card #59 still shows him as a Cardinal, a first-series card printed months before the trade that defined him.
Ernest Gilbert Broglio was born in Berkeley, California, on August 27, 1935, and moved with his family to El Cerrito in 1945. He signed out of El Cerrito High School with the Pacific Coast League's Oakland Oaks in 1953, won 20 games for Stockton in 1955, then landed in the New York Giants chain and went 17-6 for the Dallas Eagles in 1957. A five-player swap sent the right-hander to the St. Louis Cardinals on October 8, 1958. He debuted on April 11, 1959, and broke through the next season at 21-9 with a 2.74 earned run average, tying Warren Spahn for the National League lead in wins, finishing second in ERA and third in the Cy Young vote, and taking the league's Sophomore of the Year award. A sore right shoulder and close to twenty cortisone shots dragged him to 9-12 in 1961, but he rebuilt his arm and won 18 games in 1963. On June 15, 1964, St. Louis sent him, Bobby Shantz and Doug Clemens to the Chicago Cubs for Lou Brock, Jack Spring and Paul Toth. Elbow surgery followed that November, Broglio won only seven more games, and the swap became the standard example of a lopsided trade. He finished 77-74 with a 3.74 ERA and died July 16, 2019.
