About Gary Kolb

1964 Topps #119 catches Gary Kolb still pictured with the Cardinals, printed just before he was dealt to the Braves for catcher Bob Uecker on the eve of the season. It is his rookie card, coming off a 1963 season in which he hit .271 in 96 at-bats and drew attention for pinch-running right after Stan Musial's final career hit. With Milwaukee that year he split time between the outfield and third base in a part-time role.

Gary Kolb was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and utilityman who spent parts of seven big-league seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Braves, New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates. Signed by the Cardinals out of the University of Illinois, he broke in during 1960 and got his fullest look in 1963, batting .271 in 96 at-bats. That September he entered as a pinch-runner for Stan Musial right after Musial's final career hit. Traded to Milwaukee for catcher Bob Uecker before the 1964 season, Kolb bounced between the Braves, Mets, and later Pittsburgh, playing every position but shortstop and pitcher at the major league level. His playing time and average never again matched his 1963 peak. He finished his career with a base hit and two RBI in his last at-bat, on September 1, 1969. Career totals: a .209 average with six home runs and 29 RBI over 293 games. He was the last Cardinal to wear uniform number 20 before it passed to Lou Brock and was eventually retired in Brock's honor.
