About this card

This is one of the eleven combo cards in the 1964 Topps set, each gathering two or more players under a headline rather than giving one man his own card.

The story on this card

Topps paired the two biggest bats on the San Francisco Giants for this print series 4 card, titled Giant Gunners, putting both middle-of-the-order sluggers on one piece of cardboard. Willie Mays came off a 1963 season in which he hit .314 with 38 home runs and 103 RBI in center field, while Orlando Cepeda anchored first base after batting .316 with 34 home runs and 97 RBI the same year. Both men were established Giants stars by 1964: Mays already carried a Rookie of the Year award and an MVP trophy, and Cepeda his own Rookie of the Year season and a near-MVP finish from 1961. The card presented their combined power as one San Francisco attraction rather than splitting them across separate issues.

Willie Mays was the Say Hey Kid, the five-tool center fielder of the New York and San Francisco Giants: Rookie of the Year in 1951, Most Valuable Player in 1954 and 1965, twelve straight Gold Gloves, 660 home runs, Hall of Fame in 1979. Orlando Cepeda, the Baby Bull, was a powerful Puerto Rican first baseman who won Rookie of the Year with the 1958 Giants and the unanimous NL MVP with the 1967 champion Cardinals.
