The story on this card
Garrido broke into the majors in 1964 with the San Francisco Giants at age 22, appearing in 14 games at shortstop in his rookie season. His 1964 Topps card, number 452, is a Rookie Stars subset issue from the set's sixth print series, shared with fellow Giants rookie Jim Hart. It stands as a recognized rookie card for both players. Panamanian-born infielder who covered shortstop, second and third base for the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves from 1964 to 1972, topping out with a .264 season for Atlanta in 1970.
In his first full season, Hart won the Giants' Rookie of the Year award and finished runner-up to Dick Allen in NL Rookie of the Year voting, hitting .286 with 31 home runs and 81 RBI while manning third base for a 90-72 club that finished fourth. This 1964 Topps card, a recognized rookie card, shares space with fellow Giants farmhand Gil Garrido in the multi-player Rookie Stars subset. Hart broke Bobby Thomson's franchise rookie home run mark late in the season, capping a June hot streak that included an 11-for-14 stretch. A San Francisco Giants third baseman whose bat carried a shaky glove, Hart averaged 27 home runs a year from 1964 to 1968 and made one All-Star team.
