1964 Topps #303 Jim Campbell

About Jim Campbell
Houston sold Campbell to Cincinnati on October 9, 1963, which is why this 1964 Topps card, number 303, comes up Cincinnati rather than Houston. He never played a major-league inning for the Reds, so collectors get a card of a Cincinnati catcher who never caught for Cincinnati. His last big-league appearance was already behind him: on July 23, 1963 he pinch hit in the seventh inning and singled off Philadelphia's Dallas Green in a game Houston went on to win in 15 innings. That single was the 54th and final hit of his major-league career. It is a series 4 issue.
Jim Campbell was a right-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing catcher born June 24, 1937, in Palo Alto, California, and a product of Palo Alto High School. He signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955 and spent six seasons without reaching Double-A; the Milwaukee Braves took him in the November 1960 minor league draft and flipped him to the brand-new Houston Colt .45s for Morrie Martin on February 23, 1961. Houston parked him with the Triple-A Houston Buffs in 1961, then with the Oklahoma City 89ers, where he hit .350 in 70 games in 1962 and earned a July promotion. He debuted July 17, 1962, started 25 games behind the plate down the stretch and beat Bob Gibson with a home run that August. In two big-league seasons he played 82 games, batting .221 with 7 home runs, 25 RBI and 54 hits. Houston sold him to the Cincinnati Reds on October 9, 1963, and he finished his playing career in Triple-A through 1965. Campbell died October 17, 2024, in Los Altos, California.
