1964 Topps #304 Bob Johnson

About Bob Johnson
New manager Hank Bauer turned Johnson into his first choice off the bench in 1964, and he led the American League with 15 pinch hits. From late June into mid-July he ran off six consecutive pinch hits, tying an American League record since broken; the seventh was denied when New York's Tony Kubek ranged to his left, snared a grounder and beat him to first by half a step. Johnson batted .248 with three home runs and 29 RBIs in 93 games, and that winter the Twin Cities Winter Baseball Dinner named him Upper Midwest Player of the Year. Card #304 belongs to the fourth series.
Robert Wallace Johnson, born March 4, 1936, in Omaha, Nebraska, grew up in Edina, Minnesota, and signed with the Detroit Tigers out of high school in 1954. He spent six seasons in Detroit's minor-league chain before the Kansas City Athletics took him in the Rule 5 draft in November 1959. Over an 11-year major-league career from 1960 to 1970, Johnson played every infield position for seven clubs, valued as a versatile fill-in and a dangerous pinch hitter; he led the American League in pinch hits in 1964 and the National League in pinch hits in 1967. Kansas City teammate Bill Tuttle tagged him Rocky for his resemblance to slugger Rocky Colavito. Johnson was a member of the Baltimore Orioles' 1966 World Series championship team, though he never got into the Series. He finished with a .272 batting average, 44 home runs and 230 RBIs in 874 games across stints with the Athletics, Senators, Orioles, Mets, Reds, Braves, Cardinals and the Athletics again, by then in Oakland. After retiring he returned to Minnesota and worked in sales. He died in St. Paul in November 2019 at 83.
