About Lou Jackson

Jackson opened 1964 with the Orioles after Baltimore drafted him from Toronto that winter, but big-league time stayed scarce; he appeared in only four games, highlighted by a 3-for-5 day in Detroit on May 10, before his final major-league at-bat the next night. He spent most of the year with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings, batting .262 with 23 home runs as Rochester won the International League title. His 1964 Topps card, #511, comes from the set's sixth print series.

Lou Jackson was a hard-hitting left-handed outfielder out of Grambling College who spent parts of three seasons in the majors with the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles between 1958 and 1964. Signed by the Cubs in 1957, he tore through the minors with big power numbers, including a batting title at Lancaster and an MVP season at Toronto in 1963 that led the Orioles to draft him. His big-league time stayed limited to spot duty, but he kept producing in Triple-A and winter ball. After one more season in the Orioles' system, he signed with the Sankei Atoms of Japan's Central League in 1966, where he twice ranked among its home run leaders. He collapsed at the plate during the 1968 season and died the following year of pancreatitis at age 33. He was not elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

It is card #511 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Lou Jackson of the Baltimore Orioles.

Why is #511 harder to find?
