About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

Haas was working his way through the Mets system when Topps paired him with fellow prospect Dick Smith on a Rookie Stars card in the 1964 set's fifth series. It is Smith's rookie card, issued after his first 20 games for New York in 1963; Haas had already appeared on a 1963 Topps Rookie Stars card. Haas continued playing in the Mets' minor league chain through 1966 without a promotion to the majors. A power-hitting Mets farmhand who never reached the majors, but batted .368 with 33 home runs and 144 RBI for the Reno Silver Sox in 1962, his one huge season.

Smith's second season had him again shuttling between first base and the outfield for a rebuilding Mets club, playing 18 games at first and 13 in the outfield while hitting .223 with three RBI. His 1964 Topps card is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from the set's fifth series, pairing him with fellow Mets hopeful Bill Haas, who never reached the majors; it is Smith's rookie card. Oregon-born outfielder and first baseman who debuted with the 1963 Mets, split time between the two positions into 1964, then closed out his career with the 1965 Dodgers, batting .218 over three big-league seasons with no All-Star selections.

It is card #398 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Bill Haas and Dick Smith.

Is 1964 Topps #398 a rookie card?

Yes - #398 is the rookie card of Dick Smith. Bill Haas had already appeared on an earlier Topps card, so it is not his rookie card.

Why is #398 harder to find?

It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.

How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?

587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
