1964 Topps #477 Mike Joyce

About Mike Joyce
Card #477 lands in the sixth series; his 1963 card was #66. Topps has him as a New York Met, a uniform he never wore for a major league pitch. Behind the card is a thin 1963: he started in the minors for most of it and got only six relief outings for Chicago, allowing 13 hits in 10.2 innings for an 8.44 ERA while the Sox bullpen leaned on Hoyt Wilhelm and Jim Brosnan. The White Sox sold him to New York for cash on March 31, 1964; he damaged his pitching shoulder that spring and never got off the Mets' farm.
Michael Lewis Joyce, born February 12, 1941 in Detroit, attended Dondero High School in Royal Oak and pitched at the University of Michigan, where future All-Star catcher Bill Freehan was a teammate and Joyce was named All-Big Ten in 1961. The Chicago White Sox signed the 6-foot-2 right-hander as an amateur free agent before the 1962 season. He spent the first half of that year in the low minors, then debuted on July 2, 1962 with a scoreless inning of relief against the Detroit Tigers at Tiger Stadium. Used almost entirely out of the bullpen - one start in 31 career appearances - he went 2-1 with a 4.33 ERA, two saves, 22 walks and 16 strikeouts in 54 innings across parts of two seasons, every one of them for the White Sox. Chicago sold him to the New York Mets for cash on March 31, 1964, but he damaged his pitching shoulder that spring and never pitched in the majors again, going 0-13 with a 7.09 ERA at several levels of the Mets' system before two last minor league outings in 1965 closed out his career.

Why is #477 harder to find?
