About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
In his first full big-league season, Carty hit .330 for the Milwaukee Braves, second in the National League only to Roberto Clemente, and finished runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year behind Philadelphia's Dick Allen. He took over in left field after Felipe Alou was hurt in late June and helped spark a hot stretch for the Braves. Card #476, a Rookie Stars issue from the sixth print series, pairs him with fellow Braves prospect Dick Kelley, and it is a recognized rookie card. Rico Carty, a Dominican-born outfielder, hit .299 over fifteen big-league seasons, capturing the 1970 National League batting title at .366 and helping the Atlanta Braves win their first division championship in 1969.
Kelley made the Braves out of spring training in 1964, a surprise after two ordinary minor-league seasons, and debuted April 15 against the Giants. His control abandoned him early, and soon after he developed numbness in his pitching hand, eventually traced to a circulatory disorder that put him on the disabled list for most of the year. He appeared in just two games for Milwaukee. This 1964 Topps Rookie Stars card, sharing the panel with fellow Brave Rico Carty, is recognized as his rookie card. A wild-armed lefty out of Brighton, Massachusetts, Kelley battled control issues and a circulatory scare before carving out seven big-league seasons with the Braves and Padres.
