About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Knowles was still working his way through the Orioles system in 1964, splitting the year with Triple-A Rochester as Baltimore's pitching pipeline kept producing arms. This series-5 Rookie Stars card, shared with fellow Orioles farmhand Les Narum, is recognized as his rookie card and arrived a full season before his April 1965 major-league debut at Fenway Park. A left-handed reliever who logged 16 big-league seasons and became the first pitcher ever to appear in all seven games of a World Series, closing out Oakland's 1973 championship.
Sold to the Washington Senators that spring, Narum filled the club's number-two rotation slot behind Claude Osteen, working a career-high 199 innings with 121 strikeouts across 32 starts and six relief outings. He beat the Angels for his first major league win on April 27, threw his first complete game May 14 against the Orioles, and added shutouts at White Sox Park and Yankee Stadium before finishing 9-15. This 1964 Topps #418 Rookie Stars card pictures him with the Baltimore Orioles, a recognized rookie card he shares with Darold Knowles. A Baltimore-signed right-hander who became the second AL pitcher ever to homer in his first big league at-bat, then spent most of his five-year career anchoring the Washington Senators' rotation.

Why is #418 harder to find?
