About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

Briggs made the Phillies' roster straight out of Class A ball in 1964, a 20-year-old rookie used mostly off the bench. This card, #482, is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from the sixth print series, shared with fellow rookie Danny Cater, and it is recognized as Briggs' rookie card. On the field, his first big-league homer came at Shea Stadium off Frank Lary, part of a season in which he appeared in 61 games as an outfielder and first baseman. A Paterson, New Jersey native who broke in with the 1964 Phillies, Johnny Briggs became a productive everyday outfielder after a trade sent him to Milwaukee in 1971.

Card #482, a sixth-series issue, is a 'Phillies 1964 Rookie Stars' card Cater shares with fellow rookie John Briggs, and it doubles as his own rookie card. Cater made his major league debut on April 14, 1964, and split time between the outfield and first base as a rookie, playing 39 games in the outfield and 7 at first base for the Phillies. In 60 games that year he batted .296 with one home run, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored. Danny Cater was a contact-hitting corner infielder and outfielder who spent 12 seasons with six clubs, finishing runner-up in the 1968 AL batting race at .290 and posting a full-season-best .301 for the 1970 Yankees before becoming the return in Boston's ill-fated Sparky Lyle trade.

Why is #482 harder to find?
