1964 Topps #483 Fred Valentine

About Fred Valentine
Card #483 in Topps' 1964 series 6 print run was issued as Valentine finally earned extended big-league time. His contract had been purchased by Washington from Baltimore the previous October, and in 1964 he played 102 games, working all three outfield spots for the Senators, though he hit just .226 in his first real shot at a regular job. It is a recognized rookie card for Valentine.
Fred Valentine was a switch-hitting outfielder from Clarksdale, Mississippi, who starred at Tennessee State before signing with the Baltimore Orioles in 1956. He spent several seasons shuttling between the Orioles and their top farm clubs, appearing briefly in the majors in 1959 and 1963, before Washington purchased his contract that October. He became a regular for the Senators in 1964. His best season came in 1966, when he hit .276 with 16 home runs and 59 RBI while leading the club in runs, hits and doubles as a starting outfielder. He remained a fixture in the Washington outfield through 1967 before being traded back to Baltimore in mid-1968, closing out a seven-year major league career split between the two clubs. Over 533 games he batted .247 with 36 home runs, 138 RBI and 47 stolen bases. After his major league career he played a season in Japan for the Hanshin Tigers before retiring from professional baseball.
