About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

A challenging spring left Brumley on the Washington bench to open 1964, and he did not debut until April 18 or collect his first hit until April 25. A 20-for-55 surge in May won him the starting job, and he finished at .244 with 19 doubles and 35 RBIs in 426 at-bats while catching 132 games, throwing out 23 base stealers at a 40.4 percent clip and taking part in the only triple play turned by an American League catcher that season. That October he was honored at New York's Waldorf-Astoria with his fellow Topps All-Star Rookies. His 1964 Topps #167, a second-series Senators Rookie Stars card shared with Lou Piniella, is a key rookie card of the set. Oklahoma-born catcher who seized the Washington Senators' starting job in May of his 1964 rookie year and was a Topps All-Star Rookie, then faded across two more seasons; later ordained a Baptist minister.

Card #167 in the second series catches Piniella as Washington Senators property, a Rookie Stars slot he shares with Mike Brumley. The Senators had drafted him out of the Cleveland chain in 1962, and on August 4, 1964 he was sent to the Baltimore Orioles to complete an earlier deal for Buster Narum. He debuted for Baltimore a month later, on September 4, pinch hitting at age 21 and grounding out in his only at-bat of the year. This is his rookie card and one of the key cards of the 1964 set. Rookie of the Year in 1969, an All-Star as a Royal, a two-time World Series champion as a Yankee and later manager of five clubs, Piniella collected 1,705 hits in 18 seasons and remains a Hall of Fame near-miss.
