About Ed Roebuck

This card came out of a summer Roebuck asked for. Barely used in the 1963 Dodger bullpen with his ERA up more than a run to 4.24, he told the front office he wanted out, and on July 30 Los Angeles sent him to Washington in a waiver deal for infielder Marv Breeding. The Senators were managed by his old Brooklyn teammate Gil Hodges, and Roebuck closed the year 2-1 with four saves and a 3.30 ERA in 26 games for them. Card #187 in the 1964 Topps set, from the second print series and issued with the Washington Senators.

Ed Roebuck was a right-handed relief pitcher from East Millsboro, Pennsylvania, who signed with the Dodgers out of Brownsville High School in 1949 and gave the organization eleven big league seasons. He reached Brooklyn in 1955 after three years at Triple-A Montreal, and as a rookie he worked 47 games behind relief ace Clem Labine and led the pennant winners with 12 saves. He pitched in the 1955 World Series, the only one Brooklyn ever won, and again in 1956. A sore shoulder ended his 1958 season and a year in the minors followed in 1959, but he came back to pitch four more seasons for Los Angeles before trades carried him to Washington and then Philadelphia. He finished 52-31 with 62 saves and a 3.35 ERA in 460 games, all but one of them in relief. Roebuck was also renowned as one of the game's finest fungo hitters, and he was the man Walter O'Malley sent out to launch sky-high flies when the Astrodome's architect needed to know how tall to build the roof. He scouted for nearly four decades afterward and earned a second ring with the 2004 Red Sox.
