1964 Topps #92 Steve Ridzik

About Steve Ridzik
Ridzik spent 1964 in the Washington Senators bullpen, working almost exclusively in relief across 49 appearances and posting a career-best 2.89 ERA to go with a 5-5 record and two saves. He had reinvented himself the year before by adding a knuckleball, and that pitch kept him valuable as a relief specialist. This 1964 Topps card, number 92 in the set's first print series, pictures him with the Senators.
Steve Ridzik was a right-handed pitcher who spent parts of twelve seasons in the majors from 1950 to 1966, mostly with the Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Senators. Signed by the Phillies as a teenager, he broke in during their 1950 pennant run and became a regular arm in the rotation and bullpen through the mid-1950s, going 9-6 in 1953. Philadelphia dealt him to Cincinnati in 1955, and after a stop in the Pacific Coast League the New York Giants claimed him in the Rule 5 draft, where he pitched through 1957 before his contract moved to Cleveland in 1958. He resurfaced with Washington in 1963 after developing a knuckleball, working mostly in relief over three seasons highlighted by a career-best 2.89 ERA in 1964. His playing days ended in 1966 back with the Phillies, the team that had originally signed him. Teammates and writers knew him as a tinkerer who was always adjusting his pitches, and after retiring he settled in Florida and helped organize charity events for former big leaguers.
