About Bob Bailey

Card #91 is a plain first-series base card, not a rookie issue, and it catches Bailey a year into the job Pittsburgh cleared for him by trading 1960 World Series hero Don Hoak to Philadelphia. Manager Danny Murtaugh had called the 20-year-old the key to the Pirates' 1963 season; instead both faltered, Bailey batting .228 with 12 home runs and 45 RBI across 154 games while the club finished eighth. He did lead National League third basemen in double plays turned.

Robert Sherwood Bailey signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates at one minute past midnight on June 16, 1961, hours after graduating from Long Beach's Woodrow Wilson High School, collecting a bonus reported at $175,000 and a label he never shook. He debuted at 19 in September 1962 and played 17 major league seasons through 1978 with Pittsburgh, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Montreal Expos, the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox, finishing at .257 with 189 home runs and 773 RBI in 1,931 games. Four years at third base in cavernous Forbes Field never matched the hype, and two more in Los Angeles went worse, but Montreal remade him: a Victoria Day grand slam in May 1970 touched off a 28-homer, 84-RBI season, the best of his career, and he stayed an Expos regular through 1975, adding 26 homers and 86 RBI in 1973. Cincinnati acquired him for Clay Kirby in December 1975, and he was on the Reds club that swept the Yankees in the 1976 World Series. His last plate appearance came as a pinch hitter in Boston's 1978 American League East tie-breaker, a strikeout against Goose Gossage. He died in 2018 at 75.
