About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

This card is Bob Priddy's first Topps issue, a Rookie Stars subset entry from the set's first print series, shared with fellow Pirates prospect Tom Butters. Priddy had debuted with Pittsburgh two years earlier, in September 1962, but 1964 brought his first real big-league audition: 19 relief appearances that produced a 1-2 record, a 3.93 ERA, and his first career save. Robert Simpson Priddy, a Pittsburgh-born right-hander, pitched nine major-league seasons for six clubs between 1962 and 1971, working mostly in relief and finishing his career with 24 wins and 18 saves.

This was Butters's one real big-league season: he broke camp with the Pirates and worked 28 games, four of them starts, finishing 2-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 64 1/3 innings behind bullpen regulars Al McBean, Elroy Face and Tommie Sisk. His first start and first win came May 24 at Candlestick Park; he was optioned to Columbus on July 15, came back in September, and beat the Braves 5-4 at County Stadium on October 2 for the last win of his career. He shares it with Bob Priddy, a Pittsburgh-born righty who reached the Pirates twelve days after Butters did in 1962. A Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander whose brief 1960s career was cut short by a car-accident whiplash injury; he went on to build Duke athletics as its longtime AD, hiring coach Mike Krzyzewski along the way.
