1964 Topps #73 Jimmie Hall

About Jimmie Hall
1964 Topps #73 captures Hall in his second Minnesota season, when he set a career-best batting average of .282 while his home run total eased to 25. He made his first All-Star team that summer and was hit in the cheek by a pitch in late May, costing him about a week. Issued in Topps' first series, card 73 is regarded as his rookie card.
Jimmie Randolph Hall was a left-handed hitting outfielder from Mount Holly, North Carolina, who spent seven years in the minor leagues before breaking through with the Minnesota Twins in 1963. That rookie season he set the American League record for home runs by a player with no prior big league experience, launching him into a two-time All-Star run built on raw power and a compact, self-taught swing. Hall played all three outfield spots for Minnesota, then moved on to the California Angels, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, and Atlanta Braves as his power faded in the second half of the 1960s. He appeared in the 1965 World Series for the pennant-winning Twins. He is not a Hall of Famer.
