1964 Topps #224 Tommie Sisk

About Tommie Sisk
Card #224 is Sisk's first solo Topps card, a third-series Pirates issue in the 1964 set. The back covers a 1963 season spent almost entirely in relief: 57 appearances, only four of them starts, a 1-3 record and a single save across 108 innings. He struck out 73, walked 45, and the 2.92 ERA he posted there stands as the lowest of any season he pitched in the majors. Only three National League pitchers appeared in more games that year, so the 21-year-old was one of the busiest arms in the Pittsburgh bullpen.
Tommie Wayne Sisk, born April 12, 1942, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, was a 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander out of Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1960. He was in the majors by July 19, 1962, still 20 years old, and the debut was a rough one: he started against the New York Mets and was gone after 1 1/3 innings, charged with three runs on two hits and three walks. He stuck anyway, working out of the Pittsburgh bullpen and then the rotation for seven seasons before one-year stops with San Diego and the Chicago White Sox, who acquired him for Jerry Nyman on March 30, 1970. Across 316 games and 99 starts he went 40-49 with a 3.92 ERA, 19 complete games, four shutouts, 10 saves and 441 strikeouts in 928 1/3 innings. He was no help at the plate, hitting .094 with a single extra-base hit in 235 career at-bats, and he pitched his last big league game on June 14, 1970.
