About Tom Brown

Card #311 in the 1964 Topps set, part of the fourth print series, captures Brown coming off his lone major league season with the Washington Senators, for whom he played first base and outfield in 1963, batting .147 with a home run in 61 games. It is a recognized rookie card for Brown, whose big league playing time would end that same year as he turned his attention to professional football.

Thomas William Brown was born December 12, 1940, in Laureldale, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he starred in football and basketball but called baseball his first love. At the University of Maryland he was a first-team All-American in baseball as a junior, setting an Atlantic Coast Conference record with a .449 batting average, and also excelled on the football field. Rather than finish his college eligibility, Brown signed a minor league contract with the Washington Senators after the 1962 season. A switch hitter who threw left-handed, he impressed in spring training and broke camp as Washington's starting first baseman in 1963, seeing time at both first base and the outfield before a midseason trip to the minors. He returned to the Senators in September and hit his only major league home run. Brown also had a notable football pedigree, having been drafted by the Green Bay Packers, and he went on to a lengthy NFL career as a defensive back after his brief major league run.
