The story on this card
Fisher's 1964 Topps #312 Rookie Stars card, from the set's fourth series, pairs him with fellow Tigers pitching prospect Fred Gladding as Detroit showcased its young arms. It is also Fisher's rookie card, issued the same spring he broke camp with the Tigers and made his lone major league appearance, striking out Harmon Killebrew before Minnesota rallied past him at Tiger Stadium. A hard-throwing University of Michigan product, Fritz Fisher reached Detroit in 1964 and struck out Harmon Killebrew in his only big league outing, then finished out a solid career pitching in the high minors.
This 1964 Topps Rookie Stars card, #312, pairs Fred Gladding with fellow Tigers pitcher Fritz Fisher, part of a young bullpen that also included Alan Koch and Dick Egan. Gladding struggled early and was optioned to Syracuse in May, but returned to Detroit by the end of the month and pitched effectively the rest of the season, prompting catcher Bill Freehan to nickname him "Little Monster." It is a recognized rookie card for Gladding. Fred Gladding was a sinkerball relief pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros from 1961 to 1973, nicknamed "The Bear," who led the National League in saves in 1969 and finished his career with 109 saves.
