1964 Topps #481 Chuck Schilling

About Chuck Schilling
Two Schilling cards appear in the 1964 set: #182, a second-series card he shares with Red Sox teammate Carl Yastrzemski, and #481, from the sixth series. They caught him on the way down. Boston had decided it needed offense more than defense and turned second base over to 20-year-old Dalton Jones, with Felix Mantilla also taking innings there, and Schilling got into just 47 games, batting .196 with seven runs batted in - the thinnest season of his career.
Charles Thomas Schilling (born October 25, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York) was a right-handed second baseman who spent all five of his major-league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, 1961 through 1965. Raised on Long Island, he graduated from St. Mary's High School in Manhasset in 1955 and signed with Boston while at Manhattan College, where he studied mechanical engineering. After a full 1960 season at Triple-A Minneapolis he reached the majors in 1961 with his friend and fellow Long Islander Carl Yastrzemski, and his glove was good enough that the Red Sox moved incumbent American League batting champion Pete Runnels off second base to make room. Prized for slick, dependable fielding rather than power, Schilling saw his bat undercut by a pitch that broke his left hand in his second season, and he closed his career with a .239 average, 470 hits, 23 home runs and 146 runs batted in over 541 games. He later taught secondary-school mathematics on Long Island for 24 years and died on March 30, 2021.

It is card #481 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Chuck Schilling of the Boston Red Sox.
Why is #481 harder to find?
It is a series 5-6 card. Cards from the fifth and sixth print series (#371-522) are a step tougher to find than #1-370; availability in 1964 runs in three tiers, not a cliff.
How many cards are in the 1964 Topps Baseball set?
587 cards, tracked as 589 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 587 with no gaps, and no number carries two different cards; two cards - #4, the A.L. Pitching Leaders, and #517, the seventh-series checklist - carry a catalogued back variation that the master set counts separately.
