About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Skeen's only Topps card is 1964 Topps number 428, a Red Sox Rookie Stars card he shares with fellow farmhand Pete Smith. The card falls in the set's fifth print series, and it stands as Skeen's recognized rookie card. It caught him mid-career in Boston's system, the same year he was working toward two full seasons at Triple-A with the Seattle Rainiers, though the major league promotion that would have completed the story never came. A left-handed-hitting catcher out of Ogden, Utah, and a decorated University of Utah All-American, Archie Skeen spent five seasons catching in the Red Sox system, including two years at Triple-A, without ever reaching the majors.
Smith's rookie-year work with the Red Sox in 1962 and 1963 earned him a spot on card #428 in Topps' 1964 Rookie Stars subset, issued in the set's fifth series. It is a recognized rookie card, sharing the multi-player card with fellow Red Sox rookie Archie Skeen, who never appeared in a major league game. Right-handed pitcher from Natick, Massachusetts, who threw for the Boston Red Sox in 1962 and 1963, appearing in seven big-league games over parts of two seasons.
