On this card: Pete Charton, Dalton Jones

About this card
This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.
The story on this card
Charton's rookie season was also his only one: the Red Sox had to carry him on the 25-man roster all year under the first-year bonus rule rather than send him to the minors. He appeared in 25 games, mostly in relief, finishing 0-2 with a 5.26 ERA over 65 innings. This 1964 Topps card comes from series 6, is part of a multi-player Rookie Stars subset, and pictures Charton alongside fellow Red Sox rookie Dalton Jones. It stands as his recognized rookie card. A Baylor product kept on Boston's roster all of 1964 by baseball's first-year bonus rule, he pitched his only big league season that year before a shoulder injury ended his career.
This card comes from the sixth print series and shares a Rookie Stars slot with fellow infielder Pete Charton. It is Jones's recognized rookie card. He made his major league debut that April at Fenway Park, going on to play 118 games mostly at second base for the Red Sox, hitting .230 with 6 home runs and 39 RBI as a 20-year-old rookie learning a new position. A versatile Red Sox infielder from Boston's 1967 pennant run, known for clutch pinch-hitting and steady work at second, third and first base across nine big-league seasons.

Why is #459 harder to find?
