1964 Topps #387 Terry Fox

About Terry Fox
Card #387 is a fifth-series card, and Fox was four sets into his Topps run by then. It carries the heaviest workload of his career: 46 appearances and 80 1/3 innings in 1963, both career highs, with an 8-6 record, 11 saves and a 3.59 ERA. No Detroit pitcher took the ball more often. The club around him came apart, firing Bob Scheffing in June at 24-36 and handing 68-year-old Chuck Dressen a team that finished 79-83, tied for fifth.
Terry Fox was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent seven major league seasons, 1960 through 1966, with the Milwaukee Braves, Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. Born July 31, 1935, in Chicago and raised in Midlothian, he graduated from Thornton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois, in 1953 and took a Class C contract from the Atlanta Crackers after four tryout camps; the Braves picked him out of the Atlanta organization at no cost after the 1955 season. Two summers with the New Iberia Pelicans of the Evangeline League made his name, 13-4 in the first and 21-12 in the second, and Atlanta, Jacksonville, Topeka, Austin and Sacramento followed before Milwaukee called him up in September 1960. That December the Braves shipped him to Detroit with Bill Bruton, Dick Brown and Chuck Cottier for Frank Bolling and Neil Chrisley, and he became the Tigers' late-inning man for five seasons, leading the club in saves in 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1965. He never started a major league game: all 248 of his appearances came out of the bullpen, and he finished 29-19 with a 2.99 ERA, 59 saves and 185 strikeouts. Fox settled in New Iberia, married Loreauville native Shirley Dugas and spent 26 years with Texaco starting in 1968.

It is card #387 of the 587-card 1964 Topps Baseball set, picturing Terry Fox of the Detroit Tigers.
Why is #387 harder to find?
