About this card

This is one of the fifty-seven two-player Rookie Stars cards in the 1964 Topps set: fifty-three pair two prospects from one club, and the four league cards (#548, #564, #568 and #572) pair prospects from two clubs. Every one of them is a rookie card for at least one of its two players.

The story on this card

This 1964 Topps Rookie Stars card, #488 in the set's sixth series, paired Mikkelsen with fellow Yankees prospect Bob Meyer. It marks Mikkelsen's rookie card, issued the year he debuted with New York and helped the club capture the American League pennant, going 7-4 with a 3.56 ERA and 12 saves in 50 relief appearances before pitching in the World Series against St. Louis. A sidearm sinkerballer who reshaped his career under minor league manager Rube Walker, Pete Mikkelsen pitched nine big league seasons for five clubs, helping the 1964 Yankees to a pennant before his best season came with the 1966 Pirates.

Card #488 is a 1964 Topps Yankees Rookie Stars issue from the series 6 print run, pairing Meyer with fellow Yankees pitching prospect Pete Mikkelsen as the club introduced its newest arms. It stands as Meyer's rookie card, issued in his major league debut season, when the left-hander also pitched for the Angels and the Athletics after his time on the Yankees roster ended. Left-handed pitcher Bob Meyer broke in with the 1964 Yankees and later worked for the Angels, Athletics, Pilots and Brewers, best remembered for a September 1964 one-hitter against Baltimore that the Athletics still lost 1-0.
