1965 Topps #167 Bill Wakefield

About Bill Wakefield
Part of the set's second print series, this card carries Wakefield with the Mets on the strength of his 1964 rookie season, when he set a club record with 62 pitching appearances and worked to a 3-5 record and 3.61 ERA, mostly in relief for Casey Stengel. He had also started the first night game at Shea Stadium and pitched in the Mets' final game of that season against the pennant-bound Cardinals.
William Sumner Wakefield, born May 24, 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri, pitched right-handed for one season in the major leagues. A Pembroke Country-Day and Stanford product, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1961 and worked his way through Lancaster, Tulsa and Atlanta before a November 1963 trade sent him and George Altman to the New York Mets for Roger Craig. In 1964 the 6-foot, 175-pound right-hander made the Mets out of spring training and became Casey Stengel's workhorse, appearing in 62 games, a club record that stood for 13 years. He posted a 3-5 record with a 3.61 ERA and two saves, working almost exclusively out of the bullpen after a rough four-start trial as a starter. His final big-league appearance came on the dramatic last day of the 1964 season, against the pennant-bound Cardinals who had originally signed him.
