The story on this card
1965 Topps #166 pairs George Culver with fellow prospect Tommie Agee under the Cleveland Indians Rookie Stars banner, part of the set's second print series. Culver had signed with the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1963 out of Bakersfield College before Cleveland brought him into its system; this recognized rookie card arrived a year before his September 1966 major league debut against the Boston Red Sox. George Culver, a Bakersfield College product who signed with the Yankees before pitching nine big league seasons, threw a no-hitter for the Reds in 1968 and later spent three decades coaching in the minors.
Agee opened 1965 having just been dealt from Cleveland to the White Sox that January in the three-team trade that sent Rocky Colavito to the Indians. He spent most of the season at Class-AAA Indianapolis, batting .226, and hit just .158 in ten brief games with Chicago. This 1965 Topps Rookie Stars issue, #166, pairs him with fellow Indians farmhand George Culver from print series 2; it stands as a recognized rookie card for Agee a year before his breakout. Center fielder who won 1966 AL Rookie of the Year with the White Sox, then keyed the 1969 Miracle Mets with a leadoff World Series homer and two famous catches against Baltimore.
