About Galen Cisco

Card #364, a fifth-series issue, follows the fullest year of Cisco's career: 36 games, 25 starts, 191 2/3 innings, five complete games and two shutouts in 1964, with a 3.62 ERA that his 6-19 record badly undersells. On May 31 he took over in the 14th inning of the 23-inning second game of a doubleheader against the Giants at Shea Stadium and was still out there in the 23rd, when Jim Davenport tripled and pinch-hitter Del Crandall doubled him home; it is the game Gaylord Perry later said produced his first spitball. In his next start Cisco four-hit the world champion Dodgers 8-0 before 55,000 at Shea.

Galen Cisco was a right-handed pitcher who worked seven major-league seasons (1961-1965, 1967, 1969) after starring at Ohio State University, where he captained the Buckeyes' 1957 national championship football team and compiled a 12-2 record on the mound. Red Sox scout Denny Galehouse signed him in 1958, and he reached the majors in June 1961, pitching for Boston, the expansion-era New York Mets and the Kansas City Royals and finishing 25-56 with a 4.56 ERA in 192 games, 78 of them starts. His heaviest workloads came with the Mets, whose manager Casey Stengel nicknamed him "Ohio State." Cisco then built a far longer second career as a pitching coach, working nearly three decades in that job for the Royals, Expos, Padres, Blue Jays and Phillies. He ran the staff for Toronto's back-to-back World Series winners in 1992 and 1993, with Jimmy Key, Jack Morris and Duane Ward among the arms he handled there. Ohio State inducted him into its Varsity Hall of Fame in 1995.
