The story on this card
Henderson's card catches him fresh off his major league debut, made on April 23, 1965 at age 18 as a pinch-runner for catcher Ed Bailey. He had signed with the Giants five days after turning 18, and baseball's bonus-baby rule kept him on the big-league roster the full season. He appeared in 63 games that rookie year, batting .192 with no home runs and seven RBI. The card shares space with fellow Giants prospect Jack Hiatt in a multi-player Rookie Stars pairing, part of the sixth print series, and it stands as his recognized rookie card. A San Diego prospect signed for a $50,000 bonus, Henderson carried early comparisons to Willie Mays before settling into a solid sixteen-year outfield career across seven clubs.
1965 Topps #497 is a Rookie Stars card shared with fellow Giants prospect Ken Henderson, from the set's sixth print series. It is a recognized rookie card for Hiatt, issued after his September 1964 debut with the Los Angeles Angels; by 1965 he had moved into the San Francisco Giants organization as a young catcher working behind the plate and at first base. A defense-first catcher best remembered for an April 1969 hot streak with the Giants, including a walk-off grand slam against Houston, before a long run building the Giants' farm system.
