1965 Topps #575 Jose Pagan

About Jose Pagan
By the time this seventh-series high number reached the shelves, the listing on it was out of date. Topps still had Pagan with San Francisco, but Herman Franks had soured on his play and the Giants sent him to Pittsburgh for Dick Schofield on May 22, 1965. He had hit .205 in 26 games before the deal. #575 is the last Topps card to show him as a Giant, and it sits inside the set's short-print zone.
Jose Pagan was a Puerto Rican infielder who played fifteen major league seasons, 1959 to 1973, for the San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies. Signed by the New York Giants in 1955 out of the Santurce club in Puerto Rico's winter league, he spent two seasons shuttling to the minors before Alvin Dark made him San Francisco's starting shortstop in 1961. His best year came in 1962, when he played 164 games at short, batted .259 with career highs of 150 hits, 73 runs and 57 RBI, then hit .368 with a home run in a World Series the Giants lost to the Yankees in seven games. Pittsburgh acquired him in a May 1965 trade and turned him into a bench man at third base, shortstop and left field. In Game Seven of the 1971 World Series he doubled home Willie Stargell with the run that decided the championship. He finished at .250 with 922 hits, coached for the Phillies and then the Pirates through 1978, managed in Puerto Rico and the minors, and was later named to the Puerto Rico Sports Hall of Fame. He died in 2011 in Sebring, Florida.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #575 card?
It is card #575 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Jose Pagan of the San Francisco Giants.
Is 1965 Topps #575 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
