1965 Topps #407 Lee Maye

About Lee Maye
Maye went to camp in 1965 set on winning the center field job outright, and he was hitting .302 through 15 games when he hurt his right knee and ankle on May 1 and missed three weeks. He had barely returned when Milwaukee traded him to the Houston Astros on May 23 for Ken Johnson and Jim Beauchamp; after eleven years in the organization he later called it the worst hurt of his life. He hit .251 with three home runs in 108 games for Houston. Card 407 is a fifth-series card that still carries his Milwaukee listing.
Arthur Lee Maye was an outfielder who spent thirteen big-league seasons between 1959 and 1971, most of them with the Milwaukee Braves, followed by the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, and Chicago White Sox. Born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and raised in Los Angeles, he made the All-City team at Jefferson High School and signed with the Braves out of school in June 1954. He batted left, threw right, and was one of the fastest men in the game, timed under ten seconds in the 100-yard dash and successful on 38 of 44 stolen base attempts from 1960 through 1963. He won the Braves' left field job in 1961 and had his best year in 1964, when he led the National League with 44 doubles and batted .304. Shoulder, knee, and back injuries and a 1962 respiratory illness kept interrupting him. Away from the park he was a working rhythm and blues singer under his full name, leading the Los Angeles doo-wop group Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns and recording as a solo act for decades. He finished at .274 with 94 home runs and 419 runs batted in, and died in Riverside, California, in 2002.
