1965 Topps #588 Lenny Green

About Lenny Green
Green reported to Red Sox camp in 1965 as a non-roster invitee, still the property of Baltimore's Rochester farm club, and hit .385 in exhibition games until Boston purchased his contract on March 30. "I had no intention of starting the season with Green in center field," manager Billy Herman admitted, "but Lenny hit so well he forced his way in there." He homered twice on Opening Day in Washington, then played 119 games as Boston's center fielder between Carl Yastrzemski and Tony Conigliaro, batting .276. Card 588 is a high number out of the seventh series, inside the 1965 set's short-print zone.
Leonard Charles Green, born January 6, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, was an outfielder who played 12 major league seasons between 1957 and 1968 for the Baltimore Orioles, the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins, the Los Angeles Angels, the Boston Red Sox, and the Detroit Tigers. A left-handed hitter and thrower listed at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, he was valued most for his speed and his glove, and he worked all three outfield spots. A St. Louis Browns scout signed him out of Detroit's Pershing High School at the end of 1952; he then spent two years in the Army, and by the time he played his first professional game in 1955 the franchise had moved and become Baltimore's. He reached the majors with the Orioles in August 1957 and was traded to Washington in May 1959 for Albie Pearson, the 1958 American League Rookie of the Year. Green broke through as an everyday center fielder with the 1960 Senators, hitting .294, and stayed in the middle of the outfield after the club became the Twins. He finished with a .267 average, 47 home runs, 253 RBI, and 78 stolen bases in 1,136 games. He died in Detroit on January 6, 2019, his 86th birthday.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1965 Topps #588 card?
It is card #588 of the 598-card 1965 Topps Baseball set, picturing Lenny Green of the Boston Red Sox.
Is 1965 Topps #588 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last series, #507-598. Unlike most 1960s Topps sets the 1965 highs are not scarce as a run - the premium sits on the short-printed cards inside #523-598. It is also a short-print zone card. Forty-four of the 76 cards in #523-598 were short-printed; #507-522 was not. The zone is stated as a range because the catalogs disagree on exactly which cards, so no single card is marked.
How many cards are in the 1965 Topps Baseball set?
598 cards, tracked as 600 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 598 with no gaps and no printed-number collisions, and two checklist cards - #79 and #508 - carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
