About Chico Salmon

Salmon had his busiest season in 1966, playing a career-high 126 games after taking over at shortstop when regular second baseman Larry Brown was seriously hurt in a collision. He hit .313 over a stretch that summer before cooling to finish at .256 with 7 home runs, his best power output to that point. His 1966 Topps card, a seventh-series high number, pictures him with the Indians.

Ruthford Eduardo Salmon, known as Chico, was a Panamanian utility man who spent nine big league seasons, 1964 to 1972, with the Cleveland Indians and Baltimore Orioles. Signed out of Colon, Panama, he worked his way up through four different farm systems before Cleveland called him up in June 1964, when their regular third baseman fell seriously ill and opened a spot. He never claimed one position, playing all four infield spots plus the outfield over his career, which earned him the nickname Super Sub. His best season at the plate came as a rookie, hitting .307, and he flashed the bat again in a 1966 stretch run filling in at shortstop. Traded to Baltimore in 1969, he became Earl Weaver's top reserve infielder on three straight pennant winners and the 1970 World Series champions, delivering a pinch-hit single in that Series. He was known around the league for his colorful personality as much as his versatility. He died in Panama in 2000.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
