1966 Topps #197 Sonny Siebert

About Sonny Siebert
Siebert matched his 16-8 record in 1966 with a 2.80 ERA and threw a no-hitter against Washington on June 10, earning his first All-Star selection. His solo card, #197 in the set's third print series, shows him with the Indians. He also appears on two League Leaders cards from that series: #222, shared with Cleveland teammate Sam McDowell and Eddie Fisher of the White Sox, and #226, shared with McDowell plus Detroit's Mickey Lolich and Denny McLain.
Wilfred Charles "Sonny" Siebert was a right-handed pitcher born January 14, 1937 in St. Mary, Missouri. A two-sport star at Missouri, he starred in basketball for three years and helped the Tigers reach the College World Series final in his one season on the baseball team, and the Cleveland Indians signed him as an outfielder in 1958 before a minor-league pitching coach convinced him to switch to the mound. He debuted for Cleveland in 1964 and threw a no-hitter against the Washington Senators on June 10, 1966. He won at least 12 games in six of his first eight seasons and was selected to two All-Star teams, in 1966 and 1971. Traded to Boston in 1969, he had his best season in 1971, going 16-10 for the Red Sox while also hitting six home runs. He closed his career with St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland, finishing 140-114 with a 3.21 ERA over 12 seasons, and later spent years as a minor and major league pitching coach. He was inducted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
