About Mickey Stanley

Stanley won the Tigers' starting center field job in 1966 but broke a bone in his left little finger in a fall at home in mid-May and missed several weeks. He returned in mid-June and finished the year batting a team-leading .289 in 92 games, with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in center field. This card, #198 in the third print series, shows him with Detroit, and is recognized as his rookie card.

Mitchell Jack Stanley grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, starring in baseball, basketball, and football at Ottawa Hills High School before signing with the Detroit Tigers in 1960. He spent four minor league seasons, including a stint alongside future Tiger outfield mates Jim Northrup and Willie Horton, before debuting in September 1964. Stanley became Detroit's regular center fielder and developed into one of the game's finest defenders, winning four Gold Glove Awards and finishing his career ranked among the all-time leaders in outfield fielding percentage. His signature moment came in 1968, when manager Mayo Smith shifted him from center field to shortstop, a position he had never played professionally, so all three power-hitting outfielders could stay in the lineup for the World Series; Detroit won the championship over St. Louis. Stanley played all 15 of his major league seasons with the Tigers, retiring after 1978, then became a builder and real estate developer in Livingston County, Michigan.
