About Willie Horton

Now entrenched in Detroit's everyday lineup, Horton followed his breakout with another strong year in 1966, driving in 100 runs on 27 home runs. His base 1966 Topps card comes from the set's first print series. He also appears twice in the third-series League Leaders subset: the AL home run leaders card with Tony Conigliaro and Norm Cash, and the AL RBI leaders card alongside Rocky Colavito and Tony Oliva, reflecting the power numbers he put up that season.

Willie Horton grew up near Briggs Stadium in Detroit and signed with his hometown Tigers out of Northwestern High School in 1961. A powerfully built right-handed slugger nicknamed Willie the Wonder, he broke in with Detroit in 1963 and became a fixture in left field, making the American League All-Star team four times. His signature moment came in the 1968 World Series, when his one-hop throw from left field nailed Lou Brock at the plate in Game 5, swinging momentum toward the Tigers in their comeback title run; he also hit .304 in that Series. Horton topped 20 home runs seven times, reaching a career high of 36 in 1968, and later drew praise as one of the American League's top designated hitters. Over an eighteen-year career split mostly between Detroit and five other AL clubs, he batted .273 with 325 home runs, 1,163 RBI and 1,993 hits across 2,028 games, retiring in 1980 as one of the most popular players in Tigers history; in 2019 Detroit named a street after him and the Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
