About Ron Nischwitz

Card #38 is a first-series card. It shows Nischwitz back in Detroit flannels: the Tigers purchased his contract from the Indians before the 1965 season, and he answered with the sharpest work of his career, 20 relief appearances and 22 2/3 innings at a 2.78 ERA, 1-0, one of the tidiest marks on the staff. By the time this first-series card reached shelves in 1966, though, he had already thrown his last big-league pitch, on September 19, 1965.

Ronald Lee Nischwitz, born July 1, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio, was a switch-hitting, left-handed relief pitcher who attended Fairview High School and Ohio State University before signing with the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent in 1958. He reached the majors on September 4, 1961, debuting against the Baltimore Orioles with two perfect innings and three strikeouts. Over four big-league seasons split between the Tigers and Cleveland Indians, he appeared in 88 games, going 5-8 with a 4.21 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 115 1/3 innings, and hit .278 in 18 career at-bats. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, he threw his last big-league pitch on September 19, 1965. After his playing days he returned to Dayton, serving as head baseball coach at Wright State University from 1975 to 2004; the Raiders' ballpark carries the Nischwitz name, and in 2007 he was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
