About Dan Napoleon

The 1966 season was almost entirely a minor league one for Napoleon, who spent it with the Jacksonville Suns and finished second on the club with 15 home runs and third with 53 runs batted in. Another September recall followed, and he batted .212 in 12 games for the Mets, all of his fielding work coming in the outfield; he drove in no runs and never hit a big-league home run. Card #87 comes from the 1966 set's first print series. His rookie card was the 1965 issue. It is his last card of the decade; the Cardinals trade came the next spring.

Danny Napoleon was a right-handed outfielder who reached the majors with the New York Mets in 1965 and 1966. Born in Claysburg, Pennsylvania on January 11, 1942, he played baseball, football, basketball and track at Morrisville High School in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, and lost his father shortly after graduation. While he was playing at Rider University the Mets noticed him, and he signed with them as an amateur free agent before the 1964 season. His first professional year was enormous: he batted .351 with 36 home runs and 134 runs batted in, carrying the Auburn Mets to a 79-48 record and first place in the New York-Penn League, and the club added him to its 40-man roster to shield him from the minor league draft. He debuted on April 14, 1965 and singled in his first big-league at-bat, but across parts of two seasons he was mostly a pinch hitter, pinch runner and spare outfielder, finishing with a .162 average, seven runs batted in and no home runs in 80 games. Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals with Ed Bressoud and cash on April 1, 1967, he spent five more years in the minors as a player and coach without returning to the majors. He died in Trenton, New Jersey in 2003.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
