The story on this card
Jones' breakout season is captured on this 1966 Topps #67 Rookie Stars, a first-series issue shared with fellow rookie Dick Selma. He won the starting center field job that year and batted .275 with 8 home runs, 57 RBIs and 16 stolen bases, finishing tied for fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting. A recognized rookie card. Left fielder who rose from a rocky rookie stretch to anchor the 1969 'Miracle Mets,' hitting .340 that season and catching the World Series-clinching fly ball, closing a thirteen-year career mostly spent in New York.
Selma's promising rookie showing gave way to a rough 1966: elbow trouble after being hit by a pitch against Philadelphia in May sidetracked him, and he mixed rotation and bullpen work for the Mets, finishing 4-6 with a 4.24 ERA. Card #67 is a multi-player Rookie Stars issue from Topps' first series, pairing Selma with fellow Mets prospect Cleon Jones, a recognized rookie card for Selma. A hard-throwing Mets righty who became a Wrigley Field folk hero cheerleading from the Cubs bullpen, Dick Selma later set a Phillies club save record in 1970.
