About Darrell Sutherland

By 1966 Sutherland was in his third Mets season, used entirely in relief across 31 appearances. His results slipped from his strong 1965 showing, as he posted a 4.87 ERA over 44.1 innings, but he still went a perfect 2-0 and picked up his only career save. This card, #191 in the second print series, is a recognized rookie card and shows him with the New York Mets.

Darrell Wayne Sutherland was a right-handed pitcher from Glendale, California, standing 6 feet 4 inches but a lean 169 pounds. He starred at Glendale High School before pitching at Stanford, the son of minor league pitcher Ralph Sutherland and brother of infielder Gary Sutherland. Signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in June 1963, he was picked up by the New York Mets in a first-year waiver draft the following April. Sutherland worked mostly as a reliever across four big league seasons with the Mets and Cleveland Indians, spanning 1964 to 1968 with a full year back in the minors in 1967. His best season came in 1965, when he went 3-1 with a 2.81 ERA out of the Mets bullpen. He finished his career 5-4 with a 4.78 ERA in 62 games, and was a capable enough hitter at the plate to bat .238 for his career, winning every one of his decisions as a reliever.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
