About Don Heffner

Card #269 in Topps' third series pictures Heffner with the Cincinnati Reds, whose bench he took over in October 1965 after Dick Sisler was let go, hired by longtime associate and Reds owner-GM Bill DeWitt. Hopes ran high after DeWitt landed starter Milt Pappas in the blockbuster trade that sent Frank Robinson to Baltimore, but Cincinnati stalled under Heffner, sliding to 37-46 by mid-July, including an 11-game losing streak, and he was let go in favor of third-base coach Dave Bristol. He never managed in the majors again, later coaching for the California Angels and managing the Denver Bears.

Don Heffner was a second baseman who broke in with the New York Yankees in 1934 and spent four seasons as a part-time infielder before a trade to the St. Louis Browns gave him a regular job. He appeared in more than 100 games in four straight seasons with St. Louis from 1938 to 1941, holding down second base and, in 1939, shortstop, before settling back into a reserve role. He closed his playing days with the Philadelphia Athletics and Detroit Tigers in 1943-44, finishing an 11-season American League career with a .241 average, six home runs and 610 hits over 743 games. Heffner moved into managing in 1947 with the Browns' farm system, winning back-to-back pennants in his first two seasons, then coached for the Kansas City Athletics and Detroit Tigers before guiding the San Diego Padres of the Pacific Coast League to the 1962 league championship. He coached third base for the New York Mets in 1964-65, then managed the Cincinnati Reds for part of the 1966 season. He later coached for the California Angels and managed the Denver Bears in 1969.

Where SGC registers no separate row for a variation state, its slabs of that card are listed under the base state.
